I’m Back !
Hi to all my Tarot Friends in the World,
Just want to let you all know that I am back at my Truly Teach Me Tarot Desk once more and gearing up to get stuck into some serious writing. I will be dealing with all my outstanding comments and correspondence first, so if you have sent a comment and heard nothing back from me, hang on in there as I wade through the pile. It is just me who runs this whole site and does all the writing, including building the new site, which still has to be launched!!! I have many roles to play and at times it can become quite a juggling act. Throwing college into the mix, certainly didn’t help. You have all been so patient with me during this time and I really want to thank you for your support. I have had to put everything to the side in the last few months as deadlines for assignments and college exams sucked every second of my time and energy. I have officially finished college after a grueling year of information overload in Digital Technology. I must say it has been one of the toughest times of my life, and certainly not helped by fatigue from major surgery less than a year ago, and the need for further surgery in May of this year. I am not as young as I once was, and by the end of college on the 29th of June was practically in a state of collapse from nervous exhaustion and horrendous insomnia.
Once it was all over, I was packed off to the Atlantic seaside town of Clonakilty in West Cork, Ireland, to rest and restore my troubled mind and body. My partner’s house is there right beside the beach of Inchydoney, and apart from one day of horrendous rain, we were blessed with glorious sunshine. I arrived looking pale, stressed and wan, but by the time I departed a week later, clad in flip-flops and shorts, I looked tanned and much healthier. I really didn’t want to come home so soon as I felt I needed more time. Many of you will know that I have suffered from a myriad of complicated and obscure health problems in recent years, and several of them flared up while in my final two months of college. A week was certainly not going to fully heal me.
However, return I did, but something very important happened before I left, and I hold the Atlantic Ocean responsible for it. For the last couple of years I have been in a dilemma as to whether I should pack up and leave where I live in Kildare and move down South to my partner in Clonakilty. I have dithered and dawdled, and worried about discommoding my three cats by taking them away from the home they have lived in for so long. Up until now I have been incapable of making a decision, and that in itself has caused considerable stress. It means my partner must travel to visit me and vice versa. It has been a ridiculous scenario to be living in for grown adults, but there you go, that is what we have done.
Anyhow, I think it was either the last or second last day of my stay, while I was standing in the ocean staring out to sea, that a moment of enlightenment came over me, and there and then I decided what must happen. The thoughts of leaving to go back to Kildare, left me with a terrible sense of homesickness for Clonakilty. I shouldn’t feel so awful about going home, but I did. I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid if someone rang me, let’s say a government official, and declared that I no longer had a house in Kildare, no longer had any possessions or rights there, and that returning wasn’t an option I could entertain. I probably would have asked what was to happen to the cats, but other than that, I would have said, “okay”, politely thanked him and hung up before jumping up and down on the spot with glee.
Career Practice Reading
(Using Court Cards – Based on an Actual Reading)
Step by Step Analysis
This Career Practice Reading is a Guided Reading to assist you in understanding how a Mini Storyline emerges from each Card in a Spread. All these Mini Stories are then pulled together to form the Main Story which is the ultimate interpretation. You will also see that each Mini Story carries its own weight and importance. It demonstrates the fact that there is never just one story going on in anyone’s life at any given time. All the individual Mini Stories going on at the one time do have a cumulative effect however. Some of the Mini Stories are inter-related with other Mini Stories, while others appear to be quite separate. All together, they show the Whole Story; the characters on stage, behind the scenes, and audience perception. This Guided Reading aims to demonstrate how by linking and making cross connections between these Mini Stories/Cards in a Reading, one can arrive at an in-depth and thorough interpretation of the Querant’s issue or situation.
This Reading is based on an actual Reading from a few years ago. I have made a few adjustments to allow for greater variety in interpretation from a Student’s perspective. Essentially I have given you more to work with in order to compensate for the absence of communication with the Querant.
When you are ready, lay the Cards Out In The Spread As Detailed Below. Please attempt this Reading on your own before reading my interpretation. Then slowly follow mine and see how close our interpretations are. Again, there would be something mighty unusual going on if your Reading was exactly the same as mine. No two Readers are the same, so neither will their Readings be either. There should be some similarities however. Remember that your Reading may be different, but that does not mean it is wrong. You may pick up on another aspect of the Querant’s issue that I do not. So when you are ready slowly proceed.
A young male in his mid-twenties. He is looking for information, guidance and direction concerning a specific area of his life. This area is Career related. In this instance, we have little to go on except that he wants some insight on his career as he has given me no other details. He doesn’t want to ask a specific question about his Career so this Reading could result in a very Generic Career Reading. We will have to be quite alert to the imagery and make connections and links wherever we can. We will also have to use our intuition with this one.
Me – I ask him to shuffle the Cards concentrating on the Career area of his life; what he wants to do, where he sees his Career going in the future and any concerns he may have. I ask him to connect with his Higher Self, Subconscious and the Universe for guidance and direction. I suggest he Reverses a few Cards as he Shuffles, but watch to make sure he does not Reverse too many. I suggest he asks “what is it that I need to know right now in relation to my Career and the decisions I have to make around it?”
He shuffles the Cards and Reverses some. He puts the Deck back on the table. I pull the Base Card and set it aside on the table. I then draw the Cards for the Spread from the top. ………………………Continue Readings by Clicking Here
Greetings to all my Tarot Friends,
The Hare among The Flowers – Artwork by Isabelle Lynch
Well, it has been one of those weeks again. Hard to get to my work done due to life getting in the way, obligations and the ever-present Hospital Appointments that take up the whole day just to have one fifteen minute chat with my consultant. I have another Hospital to attend next Monday and I know for sure that this one will definitely take up most of the day yet again. However, I have been getting some work done here and there and am busy working on Lesson Content at present.
I also had a quick look at my Cards over the last week whenever I got the chance just so that I could share their messages with you. I write about this Particular Daily Card Reading for a very special reason as you will find out when you read below. This Reading is important on many levels as the Cards drawn yielded several messages for me. Some of those messages did not reveal themselves to me until much later in the day, in fact just before I went to bed, which urged me to remind you that what you see in the morning in your Cards may or may not make a lot of sense to you, or may appear indecipherable at the time. However, if you get into the habit of leaving the Cards you have drawn in the morning in a place where they will still be visible to you that night, you may find more messages contained within or they might read in a completely different manner. Whichever the case might be, it is wise to get into the habit of comparing your morning interpretation of your Drawn Cards with an evening or night-time interpretation, an After-The-Event-Reading as such.
Hello to All,
Following on from last week’s Health Meanings for The Minor Arcana, I have prepared some Sample Health Readings to help you get a better feel for dealing with Health Related Issues when they turn up in a Reading.
I hope that all who are studying The Truly Teach Me Tarot Course have paid close attention to the advice and guidelines provided in Lesson Nine, along with the attached Health Supplements for the Individual Cards in The Four Suits.
Sample Health Readings have been based on the Minor Arcana Cards only; Ace to Ten in each Suit, with the exception of using a Court Card as a Significator in one of the Readings.
As we progress through the Court Cards and Major Arcana, more Health Meanings will be revealed and then added to the existing Combination List.
The Sample Health Readings can be accessed by Clicking on the Link below, or by going to the Sub-Menu in Lesson Nine.
I do hope you find they further assist your deepening knowledge of Reading The Tarot Cards.

The Personal Year Plan
Whatever it is that we personally want to achieve in any given year, it is a good idea to write down our aspirations in a similar manner one would write a Business Plan with Short Term, Medium Term and Long Term Goals. What are our objectives for the coming months? Where do we want to see ourselves by the end of the year? Where do we want to be? Who do we want to be more like? How do we want to look? We should also think long and hard about our Strengths and Weaknesses in relation to achieving our set Goals. Where do we normally excel and where do we typically fall flat on our face? What comes easy to us and what do we find difficult? What natural resources, talents or skills can we put to better use? What Personality Aspects do we need to channel in order to achieve our Goals? We should also write a Mission Statement for the year ahead after reviewing all our information.
Like any Business Plan, our Personal Year Plan should be reviewed regularly and adjusted, modified or amended accordingly. We do have a tendency to think we can achieve more than we actually can. Things generally take longer than we allow for. Also, life can sometimes get in the way and throw curve balls at us that result in knocking us off our disciplined path and disturbing our equilibrium. After such times it can be difficult to settle back down and get back on track again. We shouldn’t beat ourselves up when this happen as we cannot make allowances for everything. I am sure you are familiar with the old saying ‘and so go the best laid plans’. We can only do our best, but should life get in the way throughout the year, just like when we have weak a moment, break our diet and binge eat, it does not mean that it is all over. It is important to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and continue from where we left off. We can still achieve some of our Goals by the end of the year. The rest can be carried forward into next year. The thing is to try our best.
Below is a way of using The Tarot to determine what Goals we need to set at the beginning of any New Year. This is done by looking at each of the Four Suits which represent four areas or approaches to life. choosing Cards from each of these Suits we can build our Personal Year Plan. We must also look at the Court Cards in each Suit as they will represent the four aspects of our personality, which with a bit of work and a dose of courage can be adopted or channelled to achieve our aims. We may need to style ourselves on a Personality Type that is unfamiliar or uncomfortable to to us. Basing this on just The Four Queens alone, it may be a case of having to step into The Queen of Wands shoes to become more assertive or independent, or perhaps The Queen of Cups to encourage us to be softer and more loving, or to stimulate our imagination and artistic abilities. We may choose The Queen of Swords to help us with mental discipline or communication, even speaking up for ourselves. We may need to call on The Queen of Pentacles to make us more domesticated, nurturing, healthy, better at managing our finances or more business-like.
We must then look to The Major Arcana for the powerful forces which will act as our Key Motivators to achieving our Goals. These will represent our Ultimate Objectives for the year ahead. These Cards can be viewed on a regular basis to determine how we are progressing. Do we feel closer or more connected to them as the months go on or do they seem as elusive as ever? Our aim must be to eventually meld into our chosen Major Arcana so that we are in a position to say ‘yes, this is me, this is I’. You need to feel suffused with the powerful energy of these Cards. Let these Ultimate Objective Cards be your Guiding Light throughout the Year.

The Importance of Daily Readings
An excellent way to get to know The Tarot Cards is by doing a Daily Reading for yourself. Now, I don’t mean sitting down and doing an elaborate layout or Spread, with much thought given to the wording of questions etc. What I mean is a simple one, two or three Card Reading for yourself before your day kicks off. I have got into the practice of doing this every day and it is amazing how accurate they turn out to be. Doing a Daily Card Reading for yourself can be of immense help when you are not particularly feeling up to the day that lies ahead of you, or when you are lacking motivation or self-belief. They are also helpful when we know of difficulties we are going to encounter, for they can give us that boost of morale we so badly need to get through them. They can also give us pre-warnings of problems that we are likely to encounter, and even offer some advise on how to handle them. And so with our Daily Card Readings, we can step out into the world, or just even down the stairs, feeling more in control of our life and the day ahead. With our Daily Card Reading we won’t suddenly be taken by surprise by events of the day, for we will have sensed them coming.
However, it does happen that our Daily Card Reading only means something to us, or is fully understood by the close of the day, when events have already happened, come and gone. Then we glance at the Cards we drew that morning and say ‘ah, now I get you’. Therefore it is important not to discard your Daily Card Readings just because we do not get what they are trying to tell us. This is how we learn. By reflecting on them later in the day, we can see so much more that we didn’t see that morning. Hindsight gives us 20/20 vision, but again this is how we learn. As time goes by you will begin to make more and more connections with the Cards you draw for your Daily Readings, and will learn to trust them. However, no Reading should ever interfere with your free will. Remember, you own the results of your Reading and not the other way around. You can do with them as you wish, act on them or ignore them, but never blindly follow them. The more you practice these Readings, the stronger the energy builds. You will see the strength of this energy when you pull a couple of Cards in the morning and they are just spot on with what you are planning to do with your day. Let me tell you the way I do this, and I stress, it is very casual. I am very busy writing this course and a lot of others things besides. I do not have the time for elaborate Spreads and much thinking first thing in the morning.
- I use a Deck that I have dedicated to myself. I only use these Cards for my own Readings. Therefore, a certain energy has built up around these Cards. The energy is my energy, and so I feel each time I use these Cards, they are becoming more finely tuned into telling my story for they have got to know me well.
- At the beginning of each week, I give the Cards a thorough Cleansing and Clearing by dealing them out into three separate decks while invoking The Violet Flame around them. Surrounding them with White Light will have the same cleansing effect. What this does is separate all the Cards of the previous week’s Readings and leaves them ready for the new week ahead. I do not cleanse the Deck again until the following week but will certainly give them a very good shuffle each day. My Deck is now ready for shuffling.
- I give the Cards a good shuffle while simply asking my Higher Self ‘what do I need to know today?’ or ‘what should I be aware of today?’ or ‘what will help me with my day?’ or ‘how can I get the best out of my day?’.
- When I have finished shuffling, I pick the Card from the top of the Deck and the Card from the base of The Deck. I rarely draw any more for I am determined that these will be enough. However, if the Cards I have drawn are unsettling, then I sometimes pull a couple more for clarification. I turn my Cards over to see what I have drawn. I may spend only two seconds looking at them, or possibly a couple of minutes if I am unsure as to their message. Then I leave them down beside my computer where I will be working all day, and there they stay until the next day.
- If I have not received their message loud and clear, I will glance at them occasionally throughout the day to see if any information filters through from them. Usually it does, but if not I will have a look at them just before I turn out the lights before bed. Sometimes it is only then that they become significant to me. This can happen for many reasons. On some occasions the day is almost over before a situation or incident occurs, or a phone call comes in bringing with it the news or information the Cards had indicated that morning. Sometimes I just don’t get it, simple as that. When that happens, it is a humbling reminder that I am still a student, and also that maybe that day wasn’t particularly good for divination. Any witch worth her salt will agree that there are some days that are better than others when it comes to making magic or craft-working. As a Tarot Reader, you will experience this temporary glitch yourself. I often hear from past students who have gone on to become Professional Readers of the terrible day they have had at a particular Holistic Fair or Card Reading Night when they have found it almost impossible to do a proper Reading for anyone. Regardless of what level of Tarot Reader you are, it happens to us all from time to time.
Let me give you some examples of Daily Cards I have drawn in the last week.
Today, I drew The World and The Hierophant. No rocket science needed here I thought to myself. The Spiritual Teacher of The Heirophant passing on his knowledge to the two disciples kneeling before him. And how far was The Hierophant spreading his word? All around The World, that far! Well, here I am today, sitting at my desk writing and typing my Truly Teach Me Tarot Course which is viewed daily by thousands of people around the world. Two Major Arcana Cards and one being the very positive World Card suggested some very determined and committed work would be carried out today. The World was also telling me that I would feel happy with what I would achieve by the end of the day. They almost feel like Destiny Cards and The Hierophant whispers to me of it being my duty and vocation to carry out such work. Now I am feeling elevated and purposeful. My life has meaning and I am doing what I should be doing.
As I look again, I remember that The Hierophant channels divine information and acts as an intermediary between the spiritual and the physical. This makes me think about how I feel sometimes after reading back over my work, especially at a later date. I sometimes question if I wrote it for I cannot remember typing it. And where did I get all that information from? Did I really write that? Maybe I am being helped in my writing at times by a higher source or power. Gosh these Cards have certainly given me a lot to think about.
The Heirophant carries the number of 5, so I must remember to be as open in my teachings as possible. I must teach and not preach. The The World totals 3 and speaks of creativity, growth and progress. Their combined number is 8, a number of strength, commitment and hard work. Yesterday, I felt almost overwhelmed by all the work and writing I had still to do. I cried to my partner over dinner, ‘will I ever be finished?’. I was feeling tired, had sore shoulders and a bad neck after eight hours of typing and questioned why I was putting myself through such torture/ The number Eight tells me that I have the strength and determination to see this through to the end, and that now is not the time for quitting after so much work has already being completed. The World confirmed to me that yes, I would successfully complete and not to worry because everything was progressing nicely.
Looking at her again, she is also telling me to move my body more, to take breaks from the computer for exercise and enjoyment. I was very stiff after yesterday. She is telling me that it is not healthy to sit for so long. Just before I finish writing about my Cards today, I see something else about The World Card that has caught my attention. I have been making some bunting for my niece and it is almost complete. It will be for her new baby’s nursery. This will be her first baby. She supplied me with the fabric, all in different patterns. This evening I will be meeting with her to discuss which order she wants the bunting hung in. I will be bringing with me the long white cord and we will pin the bunting in order and in place while I am there. My niece is very excited about getting the bunting. In the World Card, the circle of green laurel with the images at each corner are symbolically flashing at me likening them to the bunting hanging on the cord. The figure in the circle is also suggesting to me my niece’s baby which is due to be born soon. Maybe I am mad, but the more I look, the more I see. Nice Cards, thank you Universe.
Earlier in the week my partner, who also does his Daily Cards drew The Knight of Wands and King of Pentacles. Let me fill you in. He has put an offer in on a house in Dingle on the South West Coast of Ireland. His offer has been accepted but he needs to secure a small mortgage to make up the shortfall. He had spent weeks in and out of the building society bringing them all the documents and paperwork they had required, and at times demanded. No sooner would he have all his details handed in, they would be back on to him looking for more and more. This has been going on for weeks and on the other end of things, the vendor has been getting restless. My partner was told a month ago that he would have word on his loan application within a week. By the end of last week he still had heard nothing. On Monday morning he pulled these two Cards and brought them to me.
I immediately told him not to expect any news in relation to his mortgage application that day. I could see clearly what was going on. Here was my poor partner, depicted as The Knight of Wands and that told me enough. I already knew he was very frustrated with all the delays. Normally he is the quiet and calm type, but in recent weeks he has been getting tenser and tenser about the whole situation. The Knight of Wands was rearing to go, impatient and dreadfully frustrated that he was not being allowed to move forward with his plans. He wanted to move now and was finding it hard to restrain his horse. I could sense an outburst coming soon and I hoped he would not let all hell break loose on the phone the next time he spoke with them.
The Knight of Wands is overwhelmingly eager with what he wants to do and where he wants to go, but not everyone shares his enthusiasm and desperate need to be off. Just look at who he is up against when it comes to his mortgage application being decided upon, The King of Pentacles of all people, well why am I not surprised? The King of Pentacles would strongly represent banks, building societies and lending institutions. The King of Pentacles is not going to allow himself be rushed into making any rash decisions where money is concerned, regardless of how urgent The Knight of Wands thinks it is. The King of Pentacles is not a risk taker, neither is he a gambler. He will want to make sure that all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed before he will sign off on my partner’s mortgage. Maybe they wanted more paperwork from him?
The King of Pentacles represents the old establishment so my partner is up against the system here. He will have to wait and hope for the best, for this guy is going to be thorough and methodical. If that means an extra week or two to wait, then there will be nothing he can do about it. The King of Pentacles is the big bull and won’t be budged until he is ready. I pointed to the golden Pentacle sitting on The King’s lap and explained to my partner how symbolic this Pentacle was. ‘See that, he is holding what you are looking for and so badly want. At the moment, he is in possession of this golden egg’. Wouldn’t you just love to reach into that picture and take it from him saying ‘thank you very much, but I will take that now’? However, The King of Pentacles is telling you to be patient a little while longer while he does all the maths. He is a man of his word so will not leave you waiting for ever. So you best put away that wild horse of yours and take off that armour my poor man.
Yesterday I pulled two Cards asking ‘what is it that I need to know today?’. I drew The Page of Wands and The Ace of Pentacles. Aha I thought, these are more like it.
I instantly called my partner down the stairs. Beaming, I showed him the Cards I had just pulled. ‘Look, says I, good news is on the way’. The Pages of The Court Cards are long known for their role as messengers. They deliver the post and news in The Tarot. The Page of Wands would bring good news in relation to a course of action, movement, travel and career. I had no doubt that this Page was going to bring news in relation to my partner’s loan application. Because he was Upright, the news would be good and especially so because the other Card drawn was The Ace of Pentacles. ‘Look’, I pointed to it. ‘The Golden Egg, and it is being offered to you’. I put my hand on my heart and told him that after looking at the Cards, news was imminent and his mortgage application had been approved. He was going to get the money and it would be enough for him to secure his dream little cottage in Dingle. Great stuff.
Well the postman came and went yesterday but there was nothing from the building society in the mail. We rang the building society on the chance that word was with them, but not yet in the post. Neither of us could wait any longer. No, they had heard nothing yet. We would have to wait. By 5pm yesterday evening, we still had heard nothing. It was the close of business and nothing more could be done for the day. My partner went upstairs to read his book, and I suppose sulk a bit. However, he was back down the stairs a few minutes later and couldn’t contain himself. He had been reading his book when he noticed the alert light flashing on his phone. Picking it up, he saw that there had been a missed call. It hadn’t rang, we would have heard it. The signal is bad where I live so sometimes calls go straight through to the voice mail. Yes, the missed call person had left a voice message. He had listened to it and between broken signals and noise he could hear that it was the girl from the building society calling him about his mortgage application. She was ringing him to let him know that word had arrived in their office just at closing time of his approval in principle. She asked him to ring her in the morning but, yes, it had been approved. Of course it was too late to ring her back but the Cards were right. Now he is running around full of life, just like a kid, just like The Page of Wands. excited and enthusiastic about the road ahead.
Just let me share two more with you.
Last week I pulled my usual Daily Cards and got The Three of Pentacles and The Empress. It didn’t take me long to work them out. Due to my developing TMJ Disorder, I have been suffering badly with my jaw, head, neck, shoulders and arms. My balance has also been seriously affected. TMJ involves multiple treatments so I have to do many things to get relief, and also need to attend the maxillofacial consultant in November. My jaw has become misaligned and is causing havoc throughout my body. One of the therapies I am using to help my jaw and muscles work properly is vocal coaching/singing lessons. It was my pharmacist who suggested this as a form of therapy for me and not my doctor. I suppose that is the way it goes these days. Doctors seem to be too busy to even look at you. Well I started my singing lessons about two months ago and now go for one each week. I cannot tell you the difference it has made in my life, not only is it helping my jaw, it is also opening me up as a person and helping me to realise undeveloped potential.
After 51 years on this earth, I have discovered that I am a natural soprano and am now be trained in that direction. I am hitting notes that leave me stunned. I have this powerful voice I knew nothing about, and my self-confidence and self-esteem have soared as a result. I always loved singing, like a lot of us do, but I never thought that I could sing. It really has been amazing. Anyway, who better to understand that then The Empress herself. A lover of drama, music and artistic abilities, she often appears to let you know that you have untapped potential in these areas and insists that you do something about them. It is The Empress who encourages you to join the local musical society, choir or drama group for she loves anything that is creative. She herself is a wonderful singer and greatly supports those who are trying to develop their own abilities. Well, she was there in my Cards that day to acknowledge what I was going to be doing and where I was off to. The Three of Pentacles was also acknowledging that I was a student of music and was off to my lesson that day. I still have a lot to learn but this Card was telling me that I had a really good Singing Teacher who had high standards and a strong reputation. I would learn well under his tutelage.
My Cards were both numbered Three, so this was a very powerful message to me that it was money well spent. The singing was helping me to grow in so many ways. I certainly was looking forward to heading off for my singing lesson that day, that is until my partner drew his two Cards and showed them to me. He does know a bit about The Tarot but he prefers to come to me with his Cards for interpretation.
The Cards he had drawn were The Tower and The Chariot Reversed. My mood changed and I felt ill at ease. My partner was coming with me, doing singing lessons too. He is a musician and was also enjoying the opportunity to improve his singing voice. We were leaving to go to Dublin for our Lessons. The weather that day was awful, with dark skies and torrential downpours. I felt a bit apprehensive after seeing his Cards. I asked him to drive slowly and to take his time, even if we were late. I told him to keep focussed on his driving for I believed his Cards were acting as a warning. The Reversed Chariot can sometimes suggest accidents with cars, or just a problem with a car, but alongside The Tower I was taking no chances. The Tower can bring massive upheaval, disruption and shock in its wake. What I feared was a car crash.
All the way into Dublin, I was nervous. Visibility was very poor on the roads as the rain poured down from the sky. As usual, heading into Dublin, the traffic got heavier and heavier. We seemed to be surrounded by heavy artic vehicles which shot waterfalls of water down our windscreen as they passed.
We got to Dublin in one piece and forgot all about the journey while we enjoyed our Lessons. When we started the drive home, the weather had further dis-improved. I reminded my partner to watch his driving and to take no chances. We took our time coming home and just as well for the rain was blinding. It was impossible to see the road ahead, yet several vehicles still insisted on travelling at speed. We managed to make it off the motorway in one piece but now had to face the twisting back roads of the countryside. There was flooding everywhere and it was difficult to get through. We were both very silent as I did not want to distract my partner who was completely focussed on getting us home in one piece.
We were nearly there, just a small village to pass through. As we rounded the bend coming out the other side of the village, the cars were coming to a standstill. In all my years, I had never encountered a build up of traffic here before. We were wondering what was going on. As the traffic inched along, my partner thought flooding while I thought accident. As we moved forward slowly, we could see the familiar flashing lights of a police car. There were traffic cones on the road and a sign that said, Road Closed. However, the traffic on our side of the road was being let through. As we got nearer the police car, I saw the big truck, a refuse collection truck. There had been a collision alright. The front windscreen was severely cracked and I got the sense that the driver had not been wearing his seatbelt. I believed that it was his body or head that had damaged the windscreen. I could not see any other vehicle involved, maybe it had been towed away? The police were waving all the cars on. It was as we passed the refuse truck I saw the other vehicle. It was another large truck and it had left the road. It had gone straight through the hedging of a field and had turned over. It was now lying on its back in the field and I was shocked. The approaching roads into the village all have a very low-speed limit. For this vehicle to have left the road and flipped over, there must have been speed involved. We saw no sign of ambulances but the accident had been quite recent. We both hoped that no one had been seriously hurt.
We were very shook as we drove in silence the rest of the way home. When we pulled into the driveway, I relaxed a bit and turned to my partner. ‘That was the Reversed Chariot and The Tower’. It had not happened to us, but who knows where a couple of minutes earlier would have taken us? Would we have been caught up in the accident? My partner had heeded the warning in the Cards and had driven as safely as he could without taking his attention from the road at any stage. We were relieved to be home in one piece.

Here is The Horse Shoe Spread for you to have a go at (see layout above). The Practice Reading I have posted below is based on this Spread. It is a Reading I did a few years ago. I have been given permission from the Querant to use it for Practice Reading purposes when teaching. The Horse Shoe Spread is very popular among Readers of all levels and can be used for multi-purpose Readings. It is a variation of the Celtic Cross Spread. It has a basic shape of 7 Cards laid out anti-clockwise in a Horse Shoe shape (click here to see exact layout of Practice Reading) . In the Reading below, extra Cards have been drawn for some of the positions at the request of the Querant at the time. When doing Readings, it is perfectly fine to add extra Cards in a Spread, but try not to add too many as the Reading is liable to get confusing. In addition to the Cards drawn for the Spread, I have also added the Base Card.
The Base Card is the Card that is found at the bottom of the Deck, after all shuffling has been completed, and before Cards are drawn. It is the very last Card in the Deck. The Base Card often yields substantial information about the nature of the Reading, and as a Stand Alone Card, it can be uncannily accurate. The Base Card should be looked at before any other Cards. If its meaning is not clear at first, it will likely make its relevance apparent as the Reading progresses.
It is important to understand what area a Position in a Spread covers. It is best to approach each Position with a flexible and open-mind. This is important for the Querant to understand too. For instance, Querants do not always understand what the Past Position means. They can take it too literally; they can think it refers to the recent past or distant, but not both. You may see something in their Past Position Card and go to great lengths to explain what it is. The Querant can look blank and say it has no meaning for them. This gets you off to a bad start. You may see a broken relationship in the past that is causing them problems, but they disagree with you. Later in the Reading this comes out again and again before the Querant eventually makes a connection saying, ‘oh yes, there was a relationship, but that was over a year ago. I thought you meant in the last couple of months’. So a two-way flow of communication is very important. The Querant must know what you are referring to in relation to time spans and what the Position implies. However, do not get bogged down in having rigid views.
The Horse Shoe Spread has Seven Positions.
Position 1 – The Past (This can be any time from a couple of weeks ago to two years ago. Depending on the Reading, and if you get a sense about it, it may refer to the distant past or childhood. Experience and practice will help with this. This Card should give background information as to the root cause of the situation i.e. where it is coming from).
Position 2 – The Present (approx. 3/4 weeks each way, but it may be more than that, so keep an open mind. This Card should yield information about what is happening in and around the situation at the moment. This Card can also throw some light on the people who are involved if Court Cards are present.
Position 3 – The Near Future (approx. 3/4 months) This Card should give an indication of where the situation is heading based on the last two Cards, how it is likely to develop. Here is where the first bit of constructive advice can be given if the Card appears to be negative or unwelcome. The Past cannot be changed, the Present is happening now, but the Querant does have the power to take steps to change the future. They can do this by changing their attitude, behaviour, feelings and actions. If the Card is a Major (one of the 22 Cards of The Major Arcana), then the situation will be quite difficult to change as these Cards indicate a more fixed state.
Position 4 – The Answer (one of the most confusing Cards and needs a lot of practice to understand its nature. The Answer does not mean the Outcome. The Answer can represent The Desired Outcome and may not be based on reality, but more like wishful thinking. The Answer can represent advice, or the solution to the situation or issue, but it does not mean that it will occur or be taken on board. The Answer can act as confirmation or reiteration for the Outcome Card, suggesting that yes, it is the best Outcome under the circumstances. The Answer Card if in opposition to the Outcome Card, can suggest that you are heading for the wrong Outcome by the choices you are making. The route you are taking is not in your best interest, there is another way.
If you are looking for a definite ‘Yes’, then the Outcome and Answer Card should both be Upright. A Reversed Answer Card can indicate blocks or set-backs to the Desired Outcome. Once again, if the Answer Card is a Major Card, either Upright or Reversed it carries more weight than a Minor Card.
The Answer Card can also stand as a representation of the Querant, highlighting their personality or where they stand in the situation and how it is affecting them.
The Answer Card in The Horse Shoe Spread is generally read last. However, should you see a very positive Outcome and Answer Card from the outset, it can be very reassuring to let the Querant know this. When both Outcome and Answer Cards appear Negative or Reversed attention should not be immediately drawn to them. The Reading should be worked through so that the Querant is gently guided and assisted in understanding the reasoning and logic behind them.
Position 5 – The Surrounding Energy (Another difficult one for Readers to interpret. It is a bit like the Base Card, but instead of it giving you background information, it will let you know the general feel surrounding the issue or situation. It can show how others are perceiving the issue, family and friends for instance, and whether the atmosphere is either positive or negative. It can expose information that the Querant may not necessarily wish to reveal, therefore, hidden agendas or the ‘real story’ can turn up in this area)
Position 6 – Hopes and Fears – This is quite straight forward. If it is an apparent Negative Card, then it represents the Querant’s Fears about the situation. It is also shows that they are quite pessimistic about the Outcome. Their Fears can be discussed and extra Cards may need to be drawn to get to the root of these fears. If it is an apparent Positive Card, it reflects the Querant’s Hopes, and suggests they are quite optimistic about the Outcome and have a positive outlook.
Position 7 – Outcome – This Card represents the Probable Outcome and not a definite Outcome. In Tarot, nothing is set in stone or absolute. No guarantees should ever be given. Telling a Querant that a certain Tarot Card is telling them exactly what is going to happen or what they have to do is interfering with the individual’s freedom of choice. No matter how excellent a Tarot Reader you think you are, you can never be 100% accurate.
The Outcome suggests the most likely Outcome based on the attitudes, actions, behaviour, feelings and thoughts of all involved, if the situation continues as it is. If the Outcome Card is Positive and Welcome, it suggests that there is great potential for all to work out in the end. This can be very reassuring for the Querant. If the Outcome Card is Negative and Unwelcome, then it can suggest that the Querant is unlikely to be happy about how things are going to work out. They may not get what they want. If you are using Reversed Cards, they may have appeared in the Reading highlighting blocks, negative mind-sets or behaviour that is stymieing a successful Outcome. Constructive advice can be given or extra Cards drawn for further insight. Look to the Answer Card in Position 4 for advice, solutions or options. It is quite common to do a second Reading using a Negative Outcome Card as the focus, with the intention of seeking constructive advice and a way forward for the Querant.
Along with Reading the individual Positions, you should be observant of Cards that are opposite each other, and diagonal to each other. If there are Court Cards, note which way they are facing and which Card is opposite them. For instance, a Court Card directly opposite an apparent Negative Card can throw light on who is causing the problem.
The above all sounds very complicated but only because it is written down. We automatically arrive at these assumptions in our everyday life as we go about our business and when communicating with those around us. No one thing ever stands alone without having an effect of one sort or another on others, or the atmosphere around it. In our everyday life we are constantly making connections and linking one bit of information with another in order to arrive at an assumption or the facts. When we watch movies, TV dramas and soap operas, we actively and consciously participate in looking at a scenario from many different angles and perspectives. We analyse the characters and their personalities, search for flaws, inconsistencies, hidden agendas. We try to second guess or predict what will happen next and declare loudly to all ‘I knew that was going to happen’ when it actually does. When asked by those present with us ‘how did you come up with that?’, you are ready and waiting with a list of all the observations, links and connections you have made. Some around you may have come up with similar conclusions or were way off the mark. We all know there are some much better than the rest of us at working out complicated plots and puzzling situations. Some of us are natural Police Officers, Detectives. Then there are those who are inclined in a Forensic manner. There are those who have a combination of the above, with minds, eyes and ears that are acrobatic, elastic and extremely rapid. Their minds flit this way and that, calculating and analysing continuously, while their eyes miss nothing and their ears here all. Bringing a Tarot Reading together does involve having to cover many angles all at the one time, a bit like watching a tv drama or movie when you are not just content to sit there waiting for the end to find out ‘who did it’. You want to work it out for yourself, and so must apply yourself to the task, and not just be a passenger. Intense detective and forensic work goes into Tarot Readings on many occasions. It takes time to be successful at juggling it all. In time like any decent Forensic Detective or Sleuth knows, it becomes instinctive and automatic.
So if you are ready to have a go at making links and connections, have an attempt at the Reading by clicking here or on the Link below. This Link will take you to the Practice Reading – The Horse Shoe Spread. Read the Querant’s Question several times and make sure that your Reading keeps coming back to the Question. Set your imagination and subconscious free. Set you mind to analytical mode. Let them report back to you with their findings. See what you come up with. I will post a transcription of this Reading next week which will should allow sufficient time for interpretation. You can then compare your Interpretation with mine.
Remember it would be really weird if you were all to come up with the exact same interpretation as mine, so do not expect to. Your Reading will be a reflection of your own personal style of interpretation.

The Querant – Male. Late Fifties. Quiet spoken and a bit unsure as to what will come of the Reading. Slow to communicate in the beginning, but once he settles into the Reading and sees how relevant all the Cards are he becomes quite animated and leans closer to view the imagery on the Cards for himself. He has never had a Tarot Card Reading before but connects quite quickly to their symbolic nature. He sees things in the Cards himself and points them out to me as we go along.
The Question – I am going through a difficult time at the moment and would like to know what the next year holds for me. I am filing for divorce, have a lot going on in work and can’t seem to see the wood for the trees. My divorce is not amicable so I know it is going to be tough going. The good thing is, I am in a very strong relationship but feel I cannot fully commit until I am totally free. I feel tired of it all right now and would love to see some sort of light at the end of the tunnel.

Spring Greetings to all My Tarot Students and Enthusiasts,
I do hope you are all keeping well and are looking forward to the summer months ahead. We are progressing nicely through The Minor Arcana and very shortly The Four Suits will have completed their current journey or cycle. The drama for each Suit is building momentum as they head towards the finish line, the climax of their endeavours. At times it has read like a Soap Opera but then, the story of The Four Suits is based on Archetypal Characters and Archetypal Situations. This is exactly how Soap Operas, Movies or Fictional Novels work as they too are all based on Archetypes. They mimic real life but in the extreme; characters with over-the-top personalities and exaggerated scenarios.
I am delighted once more, to announce that I have finished re-working and re-formating the Four Nines of The Minor Arcana, The Nine (IX) of Wands, The Nine (IX) of Cups, The Nine (IX) of Swords and The Nine (IX) of Pentacles which are now ready for viewing. For continuity purposes, I have continued the fictional storyline for some of the Cards in The Card Imagery Section, but do also include their basic description. Just Click on the Individual Images below to go straight to the Individual Pages. Don’t forget to read The Nines Introduction first.
These Cards will also be found in Lesson 9 of Part I of Course. They are also listed in the Section The 78 Cards – Detailed. Don’t forget to read The Nines Introduction Page first before moving on to the individual Cards.
As with all the other Cards, there is detailed information on the Card Imagery and Description along with the Keywords and Meanings for both the Upright and Reversed versions. Should you only require the Keywords and Meanings, then they can be found in the Section, The 78 Cards -Brief which is being created as I finish re-working each Card. There is still a great wealth of information available in this section and is probably most suited to those who just want to find out what their Cards mean rather than an in-depth study.
It is important to remind you that it is not required of you to remember all interpretations given as that would be impossible. What you are given is a wide variety of Keywords, Meanings and Associations for each Card. Choose the meanings that resonate with you, make sense or have personal experience of. Take note of these, attempt to memorise them and use them as interpretations when those Cards are drawn. In time you will find that you wish to add more meanings or keywords to your original ones as they become relevant. This is how you build up your repertoire.
There are some Readers who only ever assign one meaning to each Card and therefore when a certain Card comes up, it means only one thing. This is great if you have confidence and conviction of that sole meaning being relevant for your Querant. Every Querant and Each Situation is often complex and complicated. One meaning may not be suffice to unravel their Reading or provide any constructive advice. If one meaning per Card works well for you then that is the way to go and is perfectly fine. Otherwise, try to build up a variety that you are comfortable working with.
It is important also to remember that you will not learn The Tarot overnight, so don’t expect to. Take your time and get to know each Card on a personal basis. Learning The Tarot involves self-discipline, personal application and heaps of patience. Unlike many courses today that offer Certification after a One-Day or Weekend Workshop, allowing participants to then set-up professional practices as a qualified this, that or the other, you won’t be able to do that with Tarot. For a start, you have 78 Eight Cards to cover and remember, 156 if you are planning on reading reversed, and also many other disciplines to take on board such as Numerology and Astrology. However, there are some who attend weekend Tarot Workshops and then set-up in business straight away. I have heard from very good sources there are several to be found at holistic and psychic fairs where they have to consult their books and notes under the table when interpreting readings for people who are actually paying them for the privilege of it.
This type of Tarot Reading brings disgrace to the profession and is very damaging to the reputation of diligent, experienced Readers. No one wants to, or expects, to have to study anymore in the current climate of ‘just add hot water and stir’ qualifications. I have taught several classes over the years and at the beginning of each course some students will drop out after the first class or two. Those who come to let me know their reason for leaving explain that there was more involved than they thought. They had always wanted to learn Tarot but they thought it would be simple. Some had already attended Angel Card Reading Courses and now wanted to add Tarot Reading to their list of services. They believed it would be as simple to learn Tarot as it was Angel Cards.
I always explain to anyone enquiring about learning Tarot the complexities involved if you really want to be a serious Tarot Student. Tarot is an Apprenticeship and an Art. It takes time to become adept at it but still some students find this hard to accept. If you wanted to become a psychologist, biologist or indeed an artist, and enrolled in a college to study it, you certainly would be very concerned if you discovered that all your tuition was to be covered in a weekend along with certification and graduation. The same applies to Tarot. You will have to be prepared to work and study at it for some time if you want to be a Good Reader.
This is not to say you shouldn’t be Reading for others at all. On the contrary, you should now be hungry to practice your growing skills on friends and families members who will only be too happy to help you out. It is important to let people know you are just learning at this stage and need to gain some first-hand experience. This will take the pressure off you.
Best of Luck with your continued studies,
Vivien (Your Tarot Teacher)
