The Knight of Swords – Sample Reading Versions 1 & 2 – Relationships
Hail Fellow Tarot Friends Around the World,
I do hope you enjoyed reading about our lovely Knight of Swords below and are now ready to explore how his presence in a Reading can be interpreted. I have chosen to concentrate on Relationships at present, but will re-visit this chap at a later stage to take a look at him in Readings from other perspectives. The Readings below are but two I have worked on for study purposes. Neither Reading ultimately defines his character, but they do show certain aspects of his personality at play in the different storylines. The Knight of Swords can not ever be every aspect of himself at the same time. None of the Court Cards can, so we must play with their characteristics and traits when interpreting them in Spreads.
Vivien (Your Tarot Teacher)
The Readings attached to the Card Spread below have been invented for teaching purposes. There are two Readings based on Relationships using the One Horse Shoe Spread. The Readings have been compiled with The Knight of Swords in mind so that we can experience how his Character or Personality could influence a Reading, how we might interpret him, and the effect he has on surrounding Cards. I have supplied a Personality Profile of The Querant for both Readings, along with the background story the Question is based on. This helps set the tone for the Reading and assists in interpretation. Without it we could easily get lost with a sea of interpretations to choose from.
I have used the same Spread for both Readings to showcase how the Card meanings can be adjusted accordingly to suit the differing Background, Nature of Querant and The Question. This same Spread could be used to interpret a General, Business or Career Reading. The story, characters and plot may change, but the underlying energies remain the same. Each Card in the Tarot can be interpreted in so many ways that all we need do is change the Question and immediately a new interpretation appears or forms. This is why it is advisable to assimilate several interpretations per Card instead of learning just one.
Note in the Second Reading how I do not stick with the positional order of Cards when Reading. I make connections and links between Cards that I believe are relevant at the time, rather than waiting until the Card in its correct order of position is reached. I also note patterns observed in the overall Spread and highlight the lack of Grounding Pentacle Cards. I make observations, and contemplate motives and theories based on the Cards at my disposal. Yes, the Readings are rather full-on, but I would rather initially demonstrate Card Reading in a dramatic manner rather than offering something wishy-washy for study purposes. Learning the Tarot could get very boring otherwise.
We must also remember that each Card in the Spread may be sending conflicting messages for more than one person or point of view in the Reading. In the first Reading below, the Seven of Cups carries separate messages for both the Querant and the young man she enquires about. One must be flexible in such matters and view the Cards as multifaceted and three-dimensional rather than flat and one-sided. In the absence of a real life Querant, Background Story and Question, I have let my imagination run free. At times I forgot I was interpreting a Spread of Fictional Cards as the story began to take on a life of its own. I actually began to believe what was going on and I began to get visuals. Of course it was all my imagination, but a Tarot Reading becomes very uninteresting if one does not apply their creative imagination when interpreting. After all, the creative imagination acts as the gateway for any psychic impulses or messages from our Higher Self. Without our creative imagination, we cannot tell the Querent’s story, or indeed our own.
Please note that your interpretation of the Spread below may be similar to mine or altogether different. There are many, many stories that could be have attached to this Spread. These are just two that I chose as Examples. Please play around with the interpretations and see which story line begins to develop for you.
Background – I met someone last week at a party and we seemed to click. He took my number and asked if he could see me again. He told me he would ring, but my friend whose party it was, told me that I shouldn’t build myself up or get too carried away. She was quite offhand about him and took it all as a bit of a laugh. I was offended by her remarks and wonder if she is jealous. I have been on my own for some time and find it hard to meet someone nice. She, my friend on the other hand, is always in and out of relationships. I don’t understand why she would not be happy for me. I really like this guy but am afraid he will not call.
Question – What I want to know is what the future holds for me and this man if he does decide to ring me to ask me out on a date?

(Please Note – Position 4 should be centred below Position 3 & 5. Image Alignment not working on this Page)
Position 1 – Recent Past Position 7 – Probable Outcome
Position 2 – Present Position 6 – Hopes/Concerns
Position 3 – Near Future Position 5 – Surrounding Energy
Position 4 – Answer/Solution/Advice/Querant
Recent Past – The of Knight of Swords galloping in. No wonder she is drawn to this man for he is very handsome and extremely charismatic. No doubt she was attracted to his cool sophisticated manner and intrigued by all he had to say. He would have stood out from the crowd and was probably very well dressed too. He would have wooed her with his intense stare and captivating conversation. She would have been impressed by his intelligence and worldly knowledge. He was probably quite forward with her instead of beating around the bush. She would certainly have enjoyed his company and the night probably flew by. His eagerness to see her again has her feeling very special indeed. He quite likely swept her off her feet and she is loath to come back down to earth. Her friend however, does not seem to be as excited about this young man as she is, and in my belief, either knows something about him, or possibly believes they are not suited. It wasn’t exactly a warning but more of a gentle caution. Possibly he is prone to taking the phone number of every female he meets. He is the Knight of Swords, so he may be the catch of the century, or, on the other hand, hard to catch. Then again her friend might indeed be jealous, she may have her sights set on him too……………………………………...Continue Reading

Hello out there to all my Tarot Friends,
Yes I am back and thank you so much for all the lovely comments and supportive messages wishing me a speedy recovery after my recent surgery. Of course it would be silly of me to think that I am all recovered now because I am feeling so much better in myself as I do have another 2 months of official healing and resting to do. However, this does not imply that I am incapable of doing anything other than lying around in a bed, reading books and flicking through magazines all day while I watch my partner do all the housework. On the contrary, I was back at my computer a few days after being discharged from hospital. During this time I have completely re-worked the Reversed Knight of Swords and he is now ready for viewing. Please click here or the image and link below to go directly to The Knight of Sword’s Page. You will however, have to scroll down the page, past his Upright Version, to arrive at him in Reverse. He can also be accessed in the Less Descriptive version of the Cards, by Clicking Here.
Once again I must stress that there is absolutely no need to try to learn off all the interpretations I have supplied for The Reversed Knight of Swords. These are merely suggestions based on both traditional and non-traditional interpretations. They are provided to broaden your understanding of the personality of This Reversed Knight so that he becomes multifaceted. It would be impossible to apply each of these meanings every time he turned up. What I am giving you are options to play with. The list of interpretations is by no means complete. We could dissect him to pieces and still never get to the absolute bottom of possibilities. However, by deeply analysing his character to the best of our ability we become more knowledgable. When we become more knowledgeable about him, it is much easier for us to remember him when we next encounter him.
Deciding which interpretation to apply will come down to you, The Reader, and will depend on many things such as The Question, The Querant, The Surrounding Cards, and most importantly the Impressions you are getting from him in the Spread. Remember, you will not get the same impression of him each time you encounter him. His interpretation will be coloured by all the above and Tarot would become quite boring if we were to assign the same meaning for him in each Reading.
The Court Cards often prove difficult for Readers, even well experienced Readers. By getting beneath the skin of their personalities; walking a distance in their shoes, getting inside their heads, sitting in their saddles, or on their thrones for a while helps us to become very familiar with them. Unlike The Minor Arcana which provides a snapshot of a story for us to work with, The Courts can sometimes come across as the portraits that stare back at us from the walls of a grand old house or castle. We pass one after another and look at their anonymous faces; people we do not know, lives we have never lived, and struggle to find anything in common with them. Should we stop to take note of their name or some historical information about them, their world opens to us and we begin to see the personality come to life. The same is true of The Court Cards. Their personalities and lives are individually fascinating and we could spend forever speculating about what they do and where they go, how they think, feel and act.
The study of human psychology and personality profiling is very revealing and we can learn a lot about ourselves from studying The Court Cards. The Knight of Swords is a complex creature and we expect nothing less of him because of his association with The Swords Suit. They are never going to be easy to pigeonhole or label. The mind is an amazing thing and even though we now know a lot about it, we have barely touched on its capabilities. We can however differentiate between a healthy mind and a sick or diseased one. The mind controls everything in the body and we must approach our study of The Swords Courts with due respect.
The Knight of Swords when Reversed takes us down many tracks, for the mind when reversed can fragment into various directions. Practically anything can happen when the mind reverses. It can turn inwards on itself and become self-destructive, or turn outwards and project its dis-ease into its environment. It can also cease to function when it reverses, becoming idle and wasted. We shall visit The Reversed Knight of Swords in all these aspects and much, much more.

As we immerse ourselves in the scene of The Knight of Swords Reversed, we find a very different story. However we are not entirely shocked or surprised to see such a change in his personality, attitude and behaviour. We always knew he walked a very fine line, and that it was always going to be a challenge for him to maintain the balance between Fire and Air. It was imperative for him to keep on the straight and narrow, even if he did move, think and talk at incredible speed, was sharp and abrupt in his manner, and at times quite arrogant. He possessed the power to become that dynamic, daring and courageous Knight with a super-intelligent, analytical and perceptive mind that was the envy of all the other Knights. His morals, standards, sense of fairness and justice made him stand out from the crowd. This was a Knight who knew what he wanted and was going to waste no time in going after it.
However as The Reversed Knight thunders down towards us like a runaway train, we quickly realise that instead of being in awe of this powerful armour-clad Knight and his tank-like horse, we immediately feel under intense threat. Respect is gone to be replaced by fear. When we first encountered The Knight of Swords we were unsure at first which version would present to us. Even though he was quite intimidating and even a little scary, he was thankfully Upright, and would have gone out of his way to help us rather than harm us. That Knight is now gone and in his place is The Dark Knight he alluded to.
As this Reversed Knight of Swords approaches we also discover that he is travelling much faster than his Upright Version. In fact, we worry about whether he will be able to stop at all. His Horse slips, slides and stumbles, but The Knight forces him on relentlessly over the rough terrain and around twists and bends. We rapidly scan the approaching roads in search of any oncoming traffic; other horse and riders, carriages, oxen and carts, or even people out walking along the roadside. His blind indifference to his personal safety, the safety of his horse, and for any other innocent being going about their business leaves us shocked and horrified. We now feel threatened and very possibly in danger. The Reversed Knight of Swords cannot possibly see where he is going and seems to have no contingency plan should anything unexpected happen along the way. He is riding hell for leather as we hastily retreat from the danger zone. It is not safe for man, woman, child or beast to be in the immediate environment for they may be putting themselves at great risk with such a reckless Knight afoot. Does he not have a care for what he is about? The roads and pathways are certainly not safe when The Reversed Knight of Swords decides to head out.
As the Reversed Knight and Horse pass, we see the once lovely Grey Mount has lost his focus. His eyes look wild and glaring as his nostrils flare and teeth bare. He becomes a frightening spectacle to observe. His coat foams with sweat as his head is severely yanked to the left and right byThe Reversed Knight of Swords who treats him as if he is a machine. The Reversed Knight’s dagger-like spurs plunge into the Horse’s flanks leaving a trail of blood seeping into his sodden coat. The horse looks terrified and is breathing rapidly; long plumes of his smoke-like breath linger in the air after they rush by. We couldn’t help but notice the sharp-pointed Sword The Reversed Knight waved so callously and threateningly in the air. The black piercing cold eyes and aggressive set of his jaw told us only one thing. He was out to cause trouble, to start a fight or cause injury. It was doubtful if anyone could stop him for he seemed to seethe with revenge, and we feared for the individual or individuals who would be on the receiving end of his Sword that night. Here was someone who couldn’t get to the battle ground quickly enough and he certainly wasn’t interested in sparing his Horse.
Thankfully he has not seen us hide behind a big boulder and we now watch him disappear across the hills. We hang our heads low and place a hand on our racing hearts. So it is true then, The Knight of Swords has lost control, is out of balance, his personality has become extreme. From what we can see he has either let Fire take complete charge or he has used an inappropriate amount of Air and Fire to create a volatile and explosive reaction. We shall get little good out of this Knight under this influence.
Here we find the negative and volatile aspect of combining Fire with Air in the potentially explosive Reversed Knight of Swords. So let us look at what that might mean for us when he appears in a Reading. In this particular negative aspect, it really depends on the level of extreme, and whether it is Fire alone taking over or an unbalanced combination of both Fire and Air. We will also be looking at the effects of too much and too little Air being applied to his personality, as well as what happens when his Fire burns out.
An Over-Fired Reversed Knight of Swords and a Dangerous Leader
This version of The Reversed Knight of Swords can be found rushing headlong into all types of situations. He is known to be extremely impulsive. If he just slowed down, sat still for a moment or exercised some discipline, patience and self-control it would give him time to think things through before he acted. However, that is not his style. He reacts instantly to incoming stimuli and is up and off before anyone can halt him in his tracks. He always thinks he knows best, believes he is on to a good thing, or that the situation needs an immediate response. He is overly cocky and overly self-assured so can easily talk himself into any crazy action on the basis that he knows best and therefore knows the only way to proceed. He will find it impossible to stop for long enough to listen to the advice of others for he is deaf to all but himself. The only opinion that counts is his. Even if it has let him down, and it must have many times in the past, he fails to learn from his mistakes. He always believes that this time it will all work out. People around see him as a loose cannon, someone best to avoid, and certainly not enter into any involvement with, for in The Reversed Knight of Sword’s impetuous and ill-fated reputation, he can often bring down those around him when his plans go dreadfully wrong. There are many who have been stung in the past and have a story to tell. His friends, family, partner and work colleagues have heard it all before and wonder as to why he keeps doing what he is doing.
The Knight of Swords Reversed can come across in a very believable and persuasive manner to those who do not know him, especially those he is trying to impress or needs something of. We must remember that even though he is out of control, this does not mean to say that he lacks strong communication skills or intelligence. His Element Air is still there, even though it is overshadowed by Fire. When he wants something badly enough he will allow Air to do the talking and convincing for him. Under this influence he can tell the most incredible lies that sound very plausible. He can easily sway the unknown or naive to his way of thinking and get them caught up in some mad hair-brained scheme of his design. This Reversed Knight is just as good as his Upright Version at rallying people to his cause, but this time it is generally a dubious cause, and those he rallies are bound to be of questionable character………………Continue Reading – Click Here to go straight to The Knight of Sword’s Page. A Big Hello to all My Tarot Friends Around The World,
Well here I am again, and very much delighted to bring you some updated information on The Knight of Swords. Below you will find an in-depth analysis and study of this dashing and slightly unnerving young Knight of The Swords Family. I have gone into much detail with his Personality Profile and Card Description. I have also shared some psychological concepts, ideas and comparisons in relation to his personality and characteristics. The Knight of Swords is not an easy person to evaluate for he is extremely complex and intriguing. Just when you think you have some notion of who and what he might be, he shows us another side to his character which forces us to run back to our drawing board so that we may add a few more pieces to his jigsaw. We must never take any of The Knights at face value, and especially this Knight of Swords who is both multi-faceted and very changeable.
I have also completed revising a variety of ways of interpreting The Upright Knight of Swords when Reading, along with a host of Keywords and Messages he might be trying to convey to you.
NB*****The Reversed Knight of Swords is still waiting to be reworked, and I did think that I would be bringing it to you at the same time, but alas I have been busy tooing and froing from hospitals, and tomorrow will be admitted for some pretty serious surgery. It was very disappointing not to have it all complete but it cannot be helped. I was going to wait until after I had recovered before posting this Knight which would give me time to complete, but who knows what will happen on the table tomorrow!!! I would hate to think that all my recent effort would lie forever unseen. So with that in mind I am posting The Knight of Swords without his Reversed Section Updated. I promise to attend to it at my earliest convenience.
So when you are ready you can go straight to The Knight of Swords or click on the Link Below. For those who just wish to access the Card Keywords and Meanings without the Personality Profile there is a Knight of Swords Shortened Version also available.
See you all again soon and hope to be feeling much better by then.
Brightest Blessings to All,

Together with The King of Wands and The Emperor of the Major Arcana The Knight of Swords can represent Aries (fiery energetic and determined) and Gemini (quick thinking/talking, mentally alert, changeable) if found with The Lovers.
Now explore the personality of The Knight of Swords below. If he has turned up in your Reading it means his energies have special meaning for you at this time.
You must ask yourself: Who is he? Who does he remind me of? Is he having a positive or negative influence in my life? How can I embrace or avoid his energy? What is he trying to tell me? Is this how I am behaving? Is this how others perceive me? Do I like him or not? Do I want to be more like him? How can I be more like him, If he is not a person then what is his energy trying to tell me? How would this Knight handle my situation? Which part of this Knight am I trying to deny?
Card Imagery Description and Personality Profile
Air and Fire
The Knight of Swords is of The Air Element, but just like his fellow Knights, is also influenced by Fire. Thus we have a combination of the Elemental Energies of Air and Fire within him.
Knights represent the Fiery Part of the Court Cards regardless of their Suit Element. Therefore The Knight of Swords represents the Fiery part of Air. In The Knight of Swords we have Fire influencing Air; actions influencing mental activity, thought processes, attitudes, plans, ideas, communication.
Before we go any further we must look at what we already know about the above two Elements. We have already become familiar with them on an individual basis but when it comes to The Knights we must observe how they will react with each other when they unite and integrate.
Air and Fire have the potential to be explosive when combined. We have all learned from Fire Safety Manuals, Workshops and Talks that one should close all doors before going to bed at night, and in the event of a Fire it is extremely dangerous to suddenly open a door or window. Air or Oxygen when suddenly introduced to a contained Fire can often result in an explosion, and what was originally a small localised Fire, can within seconds or minutes, develop into an inferno as it engulfs everything in its path, travelling at the speed of light. We have seen the destruction and death caused by bush Fires that are fanned and spread by strong winds. Air will never be able to overcome Fire unless it is as small as a birthday cake, candle or match. Even then the Air must be delivered in a rapid blast before the Fire is allowed to increase in size. Sometimes we have to blow a little birthday candle or match several times before it will go out. Fire is extremely powerful on its own but becomes an unstoppable dominant and dangerous force when it joins forces with Air in large amounts.
However, we also know how to safely apply Air to a Fire in the hearth that has burnt low or is struggling to stay alight. We often blow into the smouldering embers to help it catch, or use a bellow which has been specially designed to direct a blast of Air into the struggling Fire so that it ignites and flames. We all have experience of finding it impossible to get, or keep, a Hearth Fire going. We often wonder how a Fire can get out of hand so fast when we cannot even get a silly little Hearth Fire to catch and take hold after working our way through a full box of Fire Lighters……………………………….

Featuring The Knights of Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles
The Knight of Wands looked larger than life as his Horse circled and whinnied. The young groom’s boy who had sprung into action once he had heard of his Master’s arrival struggled hard to grab hold of the massive deep chestnut stallion that seemed intent on trampling him out of sheer excitement. The Horse’s eyes looked wild and ready for more action, even after the long and arduous ride from the coast. The Knight of Wands took a tight hold of the reins and circled the Horse a few more times. The Horse snorted and stamped before allowing the young groom to come even remotely close. Laughing out loud, The Knight of Wands leaned down from his massive height and handed his Wand to his waiting Manservant who looked terrified to be so close to such an enormous beast of an animal.
Still holding control of his Horse with his left hand, he released the buckles on his helmet and pulled it free from his head. The Ladies-in-waiting spoke not a word between them as they watched his deep auburn hair fall to just about shoulder length. It was damp from being encased in his head armour, and like his Horse’s coat, was steaming from the exertion of the long ride. He shook his hair free, but long strands of it blew across his face, obscuring his vision. He swiped them away impatiently and looked around at the crowd that had gathered to welcome him home.
Through the upstairs window and still unobserved, The Ladies-in-waiting looked knowingly at each other. Words failed them as they gazed down upon their brave and bold Knight. They watched the angle of his rugged, strong and determined chin as he turned to talk to the gathering crowd. He had a heavy growth of russet red beard, slightly lighter in colour than his hair. In the setting sun, they could not fail to notice the glint of his emerald-green eyes as he beamed his delighted smiles for all to see. His skin looked lightly tanned, his complexion, ruddy from prolonged exposure under hot foreign skies.
The Golden Haired Queen’s Lady thought of his finely honed body beneath his armour. After all the months on crusade and campaign; the rigours of battle, the hours, days and weeks on Horseback, she pondered the level of his fitness and agility. He looked strong and incredibly healthy with no signs of injury or damage. She had worried about all the horrific mutilation that only too often came home from the battle field. She felt her heart quicken at the thought of her Knight. Here was a man at the peak of his manhood, virile and healthy. He was home and she could barely contain her longing ache for him.
The Knight below remained mounted as the little groom’s boy danced around unsure as to what to do next. The Knight seemed to be waiting for something, or somebody, as he constantly glanced towards the drawbridge. The young boy stared admiringly at his master’s tunic. The evening sun made its yellow colour glow like deep gold. The black embroidered Salamanders of his family crest stood out in stark contrast, making the boy feel almost dazed in its presence.
The elder of the Ladies-in-waiting began to get a bit anxious about standing up on the window ledge too long, and feared they would be scolded if caught involved in such unseemly behaviour. The Golden Haired Lady took no notice of her nervous twittering companion and continued to watch her glorious man in the courtyard below. There was a rumble of noise, some scattering and reforming of servants and guards, and The Queen and King of Wands appeared down the Great Hall steps to formally welcome their son home from his escapades at war.
The Queen of Wands stepped towards the mighty Horse as The Knight leaned down to kiss her hand. From the window above, they could see them exchange excited words, and both Queen and Knight looked so happy. The Queen threw back her head in deep laughter at one of her son’s outrageous comments before turning to share his joke with the gathered crowd. She turned back to converse with him. The King then joined them. The Knight glanced over his shoulder towards the drawbridge and then back to his parents once more. Then they all looked back at the drawbridge in anticipation. Whatever was going on?
The Ladies-in-waiting strained their necks as far as they could in attempt to get a view of what they might all be looking at, but the angle was wrong. The Golden Haired Lady felt nervous and unsettled. What where they waiting for? Who were they waiting for?

Hello to all my Tarot Students and Friends,
I have been quiet in the last week, not much writing work achieved I am sorry to say. Unfortunately I was pretty unwell and ended up in the A&E Department of my local hospital. They say I have Peptic Ulcer Disease and am now on treatment. I am awaiting more tests. I was in terrible pain and quite unable to sit down to my computer. Yesterday and today have been my first okay days, so here I am, back at my writing once again.
I do hope you enjoyed the First Instalment of The Knight of Wands Drama and the Second will follow later this week. In the meantime, I have been working on The Knights Introduction Page and I think it is worth taking a visit to read about these dashing young men before you begin studying the individual Knights. Here is an excerpt from The Four Knights Intro. Just click on the link after the excerpt to take you directly to the The Four Knights Introduction Page.
Happy Reading. I will get back to my work now on The Knight of Wands himself and of course the Second Instalment of his Drama. Once that is all complete, I will rapidly move onto re-working and re-writing The Knight of Cups, The Knight of Swords and The Knight of Pentacles.
The Four Knights – Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles
The Four Knights in the Tarot represent people, situations, atmospheres, advice or messages, based on the Elemental Energies of the particular Knight. They generally represent males between 22 and 30 years of age but they can represent a female if their energy fits and she is displaying Knightly qualities. If a Knight turns up and the Querant is convinced it represents someone much older than 30, then it might suggest there is immaturity evident in this person.
The Knights represent the Fiery part of the Suits. Regardless of which Suit The Knight represents and his Governing Element, he will also be influenced by the Element and Energy of Fire.
Fire has very obvious effects on the individual Knights. By their very nature, age and archetypal personality, a Knight is expected to be able to call on Fire at will when the situation warrants it. In fact, those in his Kingdom would think it odd, if not unacceptable for a Knight not to display his Fiery side. How would a Knight be able to ride into battle and face the enemy without Fire bravely driving him forth? How would a Knight defend the honour of The Queen and King, or race to the rescue of a Damsel in Distress, if he had not the energy of Fire to ignite his passion and interest?
Without Fire coursing through The Four Knights, they would stay at home in their castles pampered and fussed over, lounging around all day letting others do all the hard and difficult work for them. They would come across as weak in themselves, lacking in spirit, motivation and initiative. They would be enthusiastic for nothing and too tired to go anywhere.
History would have to re-write itself, and for certain most traditional romantic novels too. Rapunzel would still be locked up in her tower, Sleeping Beauty still deep in slumber and jousting tournaments too dangerous to participate in. Kingdoms would lie in ruin and pillage because of their Knightless defence. Brave battles would never be fought, corrupt rulers never ousted, risks never dared and challenges never risen to. We would never have heard of Sir Lancelot or Sir Galahad.
